To maintain optimal health, always take your medications exactly as directed!
Managing medication either for yourself or a loved one can not only be a big problem but also can lead to serious major health concerns. Studies have shown that over 55% of Americans have admitted to taking a medication incorrectly at some point. In some cases this can lead to long term complications, hospitalization or death.
Tips:
- Never break pills in half to save money. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you are having trouble paying for your pills. Many times there are less expensive options or programs that can be suggested.
- Stay educated! Know what your medications are for.
- Be aware of the side effects that are possible with each medication. Many medications that seniors take can cause dizziness or decrease in blood pressure which could lead to falls.
- Take your medication at the correct time. Believe it or not, some medications work better when taken at certain times of the day.
- Know whether your medication should be taken with food or on an empty stomach, or if there are any foods that should be avoided while taking that medication.
- If you skip a dose, do not double up at the next dose unless told to do so by your doctor. This could lead to low blood pressure or bleeding depending on your medication.
- Refill your prescriptions in advance so that you don’t go days without it if a problem occurs.
The Importance of Using the Right Medication Set
Having been a nurse for over 35 years, I have been witness to many patients making every imaginable mistake taking their medication. Some were totally harmless while otters had very severe consequences. It is crucial to find a medication administration set that is easy to use, works with how many pills you take and you or your loved ones physical and cognitive ability to use them.
Things to consider when choosing a medication set:
- How many pills do you take at one time: some medisets have larger compartments than others
- Home many times a day do you take pills? Some medisets only have 1 large compartment, where others may divide it into morning-noon- evening and night.
- Do you need to be able to remove each day’s pills to take with you? Some can be removed and some cannot.
- Are you able to open lids easily? Some have lids that are easy to open ( caution: many times these are so easy to open they spill) some have a latch or spring to prevent spilling but may be more difficult to open.
- Would you like to be able to set a reminder? Some have programmable reminders.
While there are many medication administration sets on the market today, this review is for inexpensive, easy to use 7 day administration sets that do not require any type of subscription. I have found that eventually all medication sets begin to be hard to clean, the ink may rub off or a lid may break. The sets in this review are all relatively inexpensive, easy to find and easy to use.
